The article states that data came from Mountain Rescue England and Wales, and was analysed by Ordnance Survey prior to being shared with The Guardian..

It implies that addition data came from Scottish Mountain Rescue.

I'm trying to figure out if they're measuing emergency requests or verified emergencies. I live near Yellowstone. I'm not in SAR, but a lot of my friends are. There are a lot of bullshit SAR calls. I'm wondering if this is measuring more bullshit or more trouble.

They're measuring "rescues" .. requests to attend a location, broken down by demographics, and noting that there's a dramatic rise in the 18-24 age group who appear to be drawn to "iconic spots" pinned on social media and strike out with insuffient resources or paper maps, etc.

Reports are written per incident and:

The chief executive of Mountain Rescue England and Wales, Mike Park, said it was hard to give a “definitive reason” for the rise in rescues among younger people, who have taken the top spot from the 50-54 age group, which fell slightly from 170 rescues in 2019 to 165 in 2024.

“But we know from incident reports that more and more people are tempted into risky locations by Instagram posts and the navigation apps being used aren’t always suitable for an outdoor environment,” Park said. “Add to that a tendency to follow popular routes online without knowing the hazards and context, and it’s not surprising that those likely to be relying most on their phones are the ones getting into difficulties.”

There's no mention or suggestion that 18 years olds are going up Snowden just to prank call search and rescue for "the likes".

It's a dangerous location that kills the unwary.

          > no mention or suggestion that 18 years olds are going up Snowden just to prank call search and rescue for "the likes"

Nobody implied as much. Just that SAR calls for "I'm le tired" are somewhat common nowadays. I'd be more curious about requests that required emergency medical attention.

I'm saying this as someone who has called in medical helivacs.

The chief executive is literally saying:

it was hard to give a “definitive reason” for the rise in rescues among younger people

given he has access to all the incidence reports and a body of staff that attended and proffer first hand opinions it seems reasonable to assume that no general drop in stamina was observed as it would have been mentioned had it been.

I'm saying this as someone that has worked SES, VFRS, St John's, et al. in the field and on IT consultancy as a data monkey.
